Success! After a frustrating few days, an awkward-to-find software fault has been pinned down and remedied. If you're a techie you'll know the deal with fixing errant interrupt service routines - the very act of debugging alters the relative timing and ordering of things, yielding annoying red herrings or sometimes masking the problem altogether.
Meanwhile, being a barefoot engineer has its practical advantages: I'm not perpetually charged with static electricity. Which is just as well given the sea of sensitive electronics all over my desk...
