Recommended software

We all know about Thunderbird and Firefox, and here are a few other excellent pieces of software I can recommend (some free, some not). See also the What we can do section for other software I use every day, and click here for the software used to create this website.

  • EditPad Pro | www.editpadpro.com

    Superb little programmer's editor. Good customer service too.

  • FinePrint and PDF Factory | www.fineprint.com

    I've been using this print management and PDF generator software for some time.

  • FileZilla | filezilla-project.org

    Excellent free FTP client.

  • FishEye | www.atlassian.com/software/fisheye

    Superb web-based repository browser for Subversion and others, from Australian firm Atlassian. Part of my everyday toolkit.

  • Hypoxia | www.hypoxiaplayer.com

    Media player and server software for BlackBerry smart phones. I use it for streaming from my ReadyNas DNLA server.

  • Media Monkey | www.mediamonkey.com

    Excellent free music manager and player.

  • PaderSyncSSH and PaderSyncFM | www.pader-sync.com

    Handy SSH, FTP and SMB client tools for various smart phones. I use them on my BlackBerry.

  • PuTTY | www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty

    A free implementation of Telnet and SSH. Part of my everyday toolkit.

  • QuickBooks | quickbooks.intuit.co.uk

    Intuit's accounts software. I'm currently using Pro 2008 and it's very friendly and very easy to use.

  • SmarterMail | www.smartertools.com

    Excellent mail server software for Windows, and the free edition is perfect for small businesses with some in-house technical know-how.

  • TortoiseSVN | tortoisesvn.tigris.org

    Excellent GUI for the Subversion revision control system. It integrates with Windows Explorer, and is part of my everyday toolkit.

  • TrueCrypt | www.truecrypt.org

    Free, multi-platform disk encryption software.
